General

The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Public Safety Department is an accredited agency dedicated to the welfare of the University community. Our mission is to “…support the University’s core mission of teaching, research, and public service by developing partnerships within the University Community that encourage problem solving and communication in order to identify and address public safety and transportation needs with professionalism and integrity, while protecting North Carolina’s future.” Visit the Department of Public Safety website.

The UNC at Chapel Hill police officers are qualified sworn officers. They are commissioned and hold the same responsibility and authority as city police officers or sheriff’s deputies. Our police officers protect campus 24 hours a day, 365 days a year and are part of the day to day operations as well as campus events.

UNC Police strive to be active members of the campus community. The Department of Public Safety publishes an Annual Report which reflects the united efforts and resulting achievements of the department. The goal of the report is to communicate the vision of being a leading community-oriented Public Safety Department in the nation. The UNC Department of Public Safety remains dedicated to the creation and maintenance of a safe environment for students, employees, and visitors.
