- Continue to utilize the customer-feedback mechanism of the Collaborative Laboratory Inspection Program (CLIP) to drive early identification of safety risks, hazards, communications and training needs.
- Train and implement the 5S Management Process for Environmental Affairs Waste Handling group pertaining to all vehicles, storage and office areas.
- In collaboration with Facilities Services, continue to develop strategies to expand the cleaning of air-handling units to improve energy savings as well as enhanced indoor air quality.
- Review and update written protocols for the medical surveillance program to support customer service and the mission of the UEOHC.
- Finalize the implementation of the on-line HMP program across campus. Develop a chemical inventory tracking section.
- Lead a cross functional team to review the issue of fire false alarms across campus. This team will analyze the 2013 data of false alarms, identify improvements to the fire alarm process and minimize the number of false alarms so that the Chapel Hill false alarm ordinance will not be a financial burden to the University.
- Expand the capability of the Fire Safety section use of GIS mapping to improve emergency egress and emergency response.
- Develop graphic metrics and dashboard indicators (e.g. trending graphs and charts) for the hazardous waste/materials management system to improve service and customer feedback.
- Expand EHS derived standard operating procedures (SOPs) for commonly used hazardous chemicals and laboratory processes on campus. Post at least six new SOPs on EHS website so that researchers can use as part of their lab safety plan and also model their own unique SOPs after posted examples.
- Develop a lentiviral vector online study module for University researchers.
- Update the University’s export/shipping webpage.
- Incorporate the Biological Safety Manual into the new web format to improve ease of navigation, use, and reference updating.
- Review the current training programs (universal waste management, stormwater management, erosion and sedimentation control, and recordkeeping for emergency generators) for content. Upgrade and incorporate into the HASMIS system.
- Continue the thorough review of the Building Emergency Coordinator training program to determine areas of improvement, development of an on-line application and verification of required training.
- Development, identification, and implementation of an informative biotoxin website as a resource for UNC personnel.
- Develop a web page for the remediation project entitled “UNC Airport Road Waste Disposal Area”.
- Maintain the compliance activities of the wastewater treatment system at the Bingham Facility.
- Renew the following radioactive materials licenses: Institute of Marine Sciences, campus broad-scope academic, campus academic irradiator, and hospital medical accelerator.
- Implement the registration of the campus fire alarm system as required by the Chapel Hill false alarm ordinance.
- Develop strategic plan to review and implement new NRC regulation 10 CFR Part 37. These new requirements will improve administrative processes to ensure robust security clearance for personnel, and robust operational testing of security systems.
- Implement process improvements to the University Employee Occupational Health Clinic Needle stick program.
- Work with Facilities Services on the development and implementation of a campus wide oxygen monitor program for areas that have potential for oxygen deficiency (storage of cryogenics, carbon monoxide manifold systems, etc.).
- Continue to ensure that UNC CH complies with all regulatory requirements for biological agents and toxins that could pose a severe threat to public health, plant health, or to animal or plant products. Support the development of a robust communication process.
- Update, and revise as necessary, the air permitting strategy and milestones plans, incorporating new requirements for modeling, monitoring, record keeping and reporting for subpart 112(j) boiler MACT, RICE MACT, and NSPS for combustion sources including boilers and emergency generators.
- Work with NCDENR on the development and implementation of the remedial action work plan (RAP) for the Town of Chapel Hill Old Sanitary Landfill at Carolina North.
- Develop a mechanical room inspection process to identify and eliminate hazards to ensure a safe work environment for Facilities Services and Energy Services employees.
- Ensure compliance with the crystalline silica exposure standard related to masonry activities on campus.
- Support the move-in and commissioning of Marsico Hall.
- Update and integrate code and University policy and best practice changes to the University’s “Lab Design Guidelines” to ensure that new construction and renovations of laboratories are designed properly in regards to Environment, Health and Safety concerns.
- Develop, identify, and implement a new clinical location classification mechanism in HASMIS for SOM personnel located off campus.
