General
The Department of Public Safety at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill has the primary responsibility for promoting crime prevention and personal security awareness among all University employees. The Crime Prevention Unit prepares and conducts informational and education programs on crime prevention and personal safety as well as conducting facility and operational security surveys and loaning property engravers. The Crime Prevention Unit Program Information brochure contains detailed information regarding the types of programs available. Employees or supervisors who have security concerns or who desire to arrange programs on personal security or other aspects of crime prevention should call the Crime Prevention Officer at 962-3951.
The University also publishes annually a special publication on campus security designed to highlight campus security procedures and recommended precautions for increasing personal safety. This pull-and-save publication is distributed to faculty and staff through the University Gazette and is available at key locations on and off the main campus.
The University's Campus Security Committee, chaired by the University Senior Legal Counsel, meets periodically and makes recommendations to the Chancellor for increasing personal safety. A sub-committee of this committee also acts as a University Emergency Warning Committee to evaluate threats to personal safety and advise the campus appropriately based on its analysis of the significance of the threat.
