Federal Regulatory Groups

There are several federal agencies that regulate the manufacture, use, and transportation of radioactive materials and radiation producing devicesUnited States

  • Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC)
    • Regulates use of all radioactive materials
  • Food & Drug Administration (FDA)
    • Regulates manufacture of all radiation generating devices and regulates research use of radioactive drugs
  • Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA)
    • Assists State and local governments in response to large scale radiological incidents
  • Department of Transportation (DOT)
    • Regulates the transportation of all radioactive and hazardous materials on public roads
  • Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)
    • Regulates the amount of radiological effluents released to the environment and radiation exposure to members of the general public from facility activities
