You need a monitor arm if:

  • You have an LCD monitor that is VESA compliant (see monitor literature). Most monitors are VESA compliant.
  • After lowering your monitor to as low as it will go, and it is still higher than eye height. Have someone help you to determine this since it is hard to do by yourself.
  • If you deal with clients regularly and need to show them the screen as they sit/stand out of the monitor’s view.
  • If desk space is an issue, and freeing up space under the monitor will add more room to spread out.
  • If you have a visual condition that requires you to adjust the monitor height and distance throughout the day (e.g. Graves Disease).
  • If you work with multiple monitors, and the bases do not fit comfortably on the desk.
  • Your monitor is too low, and raising it is needed (Note: using phonebooks or similar works just as well and is free)

Why are they necessary?

  • Monitor heights that are too high can cause discomfort in the neck as users unconsciously bend their necks back to look up at the monitor.

Where should it be located?

  • The recommended monitor height places the top of the monitor screen at approximately seated eye height.
  • When seated at the workstation, check that the “gh” keys of the keyboard are centered with respect to the center of the monitor and your navel.
  • The recommended monitor distance is arm’s length from the body (this distance can be lessened if eyesight is an issue). If you wear progressive/bifocal/trifocal lenses, then the monitor can either be further than arms’ length so that you use the upper portion of the glasses or closer than arms length and lower than eye height so that you use the lower portion of the glasses. The purpose for this adjustment is to keep your neck straight.

Which one should I get?

  • There are several models currently on the market, some allow the monitor to go to desk height and others do not. So, do your homework and make sure the model you get allows your monitor to go low enough. The ones listed below do adjust to desk height with exception of a few mounting options.
  • They come in various mounting options. The following are examples of available mountings. Please refer to the table on the Monitor Arm page to determine which mounts are available for which models.
  • Look at your desk configuration to decide what mount is appropriate
  • Make sure the model you get can handle the weight of your monitor.
