I have been working as a Health Physics Technologist (HPT) for 11 months.
How did you initiate your career in this field or what led you to your current position?
I have a background in physical sciences, and a friend of mine who works in the field of health physics recommended I apply for the position.
Which sectors of the University does your role impact, and in what ways does it contribute to those areas of work?
My role as an HPT overlaps with many areas of the University, from inspecting and assisting academic research laboratories to assisting UNC hospitals with day-to-day operations involving imaging equipment and patient procedure.
Describe what you love most about your job.
The most enjoyable part of my job is the opportunity to talk to patients and their families about questions they have about their radiation therapies, and to hopefully make them feel more comfortable by helping to give an understanding of safe conduct as a patient or caregiver.
What advice do you have for those interested in entering a career in your line of work?
Be prepared for dealing with new situations every day and be willing to ask a lot of questions. There are a lot of knowledgeable people in this community who can help.
