The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is committed to providing students, faculty and staff with engineering controls that minimize their exposure to hazardous materials. These controls include laboratory hoods. Laboratory hoods are also known as “chemical hoods”, “fume hoods” or simply “hoods”. Hoods are addressed in Chapter 17 of the Lab Safety Manual and in the University’s Laboratory Ventilation Policy. Information can also be found in Information on Biological Safety Cabinets.

Laboratory hoods are only effective if the hood operates properly AND the user exhibits good work practices. OSHA has developed a Quick Fact Sheet with good work practices.

Chemical Fume Hood Training will provide employees information on proper fume hood safety and operational measures that should be utilized to limit exposures. Chemical Fume Hood training is a one-time training that is required for all faculty, staff and students who work with fume hoods. At the conclusion is a short quiz to verify that you have completed the course and understand its contents.

If you believe your hood or hood alarm is not working properly, contact Environment, Health and Safety at 919-962-5507 and ask to have your hood evaluated.
