Fire Safety Fair 2017More than 200 students and a couple dozen employees learned how to extinguish a fire at the annual Fire Safety Fair in the Pit on Wednesday, September 13. UNC Fire Marshal, David Guynn, showed attendees the proper use of an extinguisher. They then practiced their efforts by using an extinguisher to put out a controlled fire.

One student noted, “Now, I get it. What an adrenaline rush to use an extinguisher on a real fire.” In addition to learning how to use an extinguisher, students and employees experienced how to safely use a microwave. Everyone who participated in the demonstrations received a small sub from the Elliott Road Jersey Mike’s, and ice cream from Carolina Dining Services.

Joining the fiery friendly fun was Rameses, UNC EHS, UNC Police, Chapel Hill Fire Department, North Carolina Fire Marshal’s Office, Safe Kids of North Carolina, and Orange County Emergency Medical Service.
