Dr. Garry Coulson joins the Department of Environment, Health and Safety (EHS) at UNC-Chapel Hill as the institutional Biosafety Officer/Manager. Prior to coming to UNC-CH, he was formerly a Research Associate at the University of Georgia and at Michigan State University specializing in bacterial pathogenesis and drug discovery for BSL-2/BSL-3 respiratory pathogens.

Garry received his MSc degree in Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases in South Africa and his Ph.D. in Infectious Diseases from the University of Georgia. He is dedicated to fostering a productive and collaborative research environment at UNC-CH and assuring a safe surrounding for all students, colleagues and the greater Chapel Hill community.

Garry and his family reside in Durham. In his free time, he loves getting outdoors with his two year old son and engaging in his hobbies of photography and golf.
