Adam Swift, fire safety and emergency response manager, and Harrison Martin, fire safety professional, were each awarded an Exemplary Citizen Award from UNC Police during what is normally an internal police department event on June 28. Swift and Martin were the first two University staff outside UNC Police to receive these awards.

Fire safety staff monitor UNC Police radio for campus incidents, including fire alarms, and respond when requested. Swift, who has been employed by Environment, Health and Safety for almost 11 years, frequently responds to hazardous materials spills. Martin, who has worked for Environment, Health and Safety for two years, is the primary fire safety staff member who responds to fire alarms on campus.
