For the past four years, Environment, Health and Safety has partnered with Campus Health to host Walk-in Flu Clinics at pop-up sites across campus. This year’s initiative saw record success, with over 1,040 individuals receiving flu and COVID vaccinations – an increase from the 905 vaccinated at the pop-up sites during the 2023 season.
“These additional clinic sites make it easier for people to get vaccinated by offering convenient, accessible locations across campus,” says EHS Executive Directory Cathy Brennan. “When more people are vaccinated, it becomes harder for viruses to spread through the UNC community.”
Vaccination helps prevent the spread of viruses, which is especially important in close and high-contact environments like a college campus. Vaccinated individuals not only protect themselves but also reduce the risk of transmitting viruses to others, which leads to few hospitalizations and better recovery outcomes.
This year, the clinics saw a notable increase in participation compared to previous years. In total, 1,040 individuals were vaccinated, with approximately 1,020 flu vaccines and 650 COVID vaccines administered, totaling 1,670 vaccines altogether.
“Flu viruses mutate, so annual vaccines are essential to protect against the most prevalent strains,” says Campus Health Director of Pharmacy and Professional Services Amy Sauls. Flu seasons vary in intensity, and some seasons can be more severe than others. Flu and COVID vaccines are updated each season to target specific virus strains most likely to be circulating.
“By making flu and COVID vaccinations an annual routine, we’re fostering a culture of preventative healthcare,” says Sauls. “Regular vaccinations benefit individuals and contribute to a healthier community.”
No-appointment flu and COVID shots for students, faculty and staff are still available at the Student Stores Pharmacy, located on the 3rd floor of UNC Student Stores, and the Campus Health Pharmacy, located in the basement of Campus Health, during open hours (Mon.-Fri. 9 a.m.-5 p.m. at both pharmacies and Sat. 11 a.m.-3 p.m. at Student Stores Pharmacy only).
