Pollution Prevention at Home
Remember that stormwater runoff entering the storm drain is not treated before it enters a natural waterway. Best practices to prevent pollution include the following:
Yard Care
- Follow recommendations for fertilizing from the Water Quality Consortium.
- Consider using greenscaping techniques to reduce the need for fertilizers and pesticides.
- Reduce runoff from your property by minimizing impervious surfaces or including a rain garden.
Household Hazardous Waste
- Dispose of household hazardous waste at your county’s designated disposal site (Orange County).
- Dispose of unused pharmaceuticals properly. Orange County provides several drop-off locations
- Contact UNC Environment, Health and Safety regarding waste generated on-campus
Pet Waste
- Pick-up pet waste and throw it in the trash. Pet waste that washes into storm drains causes water pollution and can spread some types of infection
Vehicle Maintenance
- Prevent soapy water from entering storm drains when washing your car
- Dispose of used oil, anti-freeze, and other fluids at your county’s designated disposal site (Orange County)
