The Chapel Creek stream restoration, completed in 2006, restored 1,400 linear feet of stream channel and nearly 5 acres of forested stream buffer on land that was once part of Finley Golf Course. The project is on UNC-Chapel Hill property, but was funded by NCDENR EEP (now NC Department of Environmental Quality Division of Mitigation Services). Prior to the restoration, the channel was deeply incised and continued to erode, sending sediment downstream. This project had been identified in watershed restoration plan as a high-priority project to improve water quality in Morgan Creek and Jordan Lake. The new channel design allows the creek to meander naturally and overflow into its floodplain during high-flow events.
