Environment, Health and Safety proudly marks its 50th anniversary at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill this year, celebrating half a century of promoting environmental and workplace health and safety standards. Established on July 1, 1974, the Health and Safety Office, now known as EHS, has played a key role in advancing the University’s core mission of teaching, research and service by providing comprehensive environmental, health and safety services to the Carolina community.

To commemorate the milestone, EHS held a special anniversary luncheon on June 14, attended by current staff and department retirees. The event provided an opportunity for attendees to reflect on past achievements, share work memories, and enjoy food and fellowship.

The event concluded with a video featuring the stories and reflections of seven long-standing staff members, as well as their vision for EHS’s future. “Celebrating this milestone is a testament to our department’s commitment to excellence,” says EHS Executive Director Cathy Brennan. “We honor our past while looking forward to continuing our work ensuring a safe and healthy environment for the Carolina community for many more years to come.”
