Administrative Support SpecialistWhat is your position at UNC-Chapel Hill, and how long have you been associated with the University?

My position at UNC-Chapel Hill Environment, Health and Safety (EHS) is an Administrative Support Specialist. I have been associated with the University for 20 years.

How did you initiate your career in this field, and what led you to your current position?

I earned an Associate in Medical Office Administration, as well as Certificates in Medical Coding, and Billing and Insurance. I started my UNC career in Continuing Education at the School of Nursing, then moved to the School of Education in Student Services. I have been at EHS since 2011.

Which sectors of the University does your role impact, and in what ways does it contribute to those areas of work?

My role impacts many sectors of the University. I manage the University/UNC Hospitals Dosimetry Program by processing requests for dosimetry as well as the distribution of dosimeters and maintaining the HASMIS dosimetry database. I also manage the Prescription Safety Glasses Program. I support each section within EHS by assisting with the Concur Travel System, processing PO Requests, Invoice Payments, etc., and serving as backup for our Administrative Assistant.

Describe what you love most about your job.

The thing that I love most about my job is the variety of tasks that I am responsible for as well as the flexibility to complete those tasks. I also enjoy the people I work with. The most interesting aspect of my job is watching first-hand how a large group of employees, each who are extremely knowledgeable and passionate about their area of work, come together to make the University a safer place to work for its employees while protecting the Environment.

What advice do you have for those interested in entering a career in your line of work?

My advice is to earn a degree in office administration and continue to take courses and earn certificates that will assist you with communication, technology updates, supervision, teamwork, etc. Office administration positions are readily available with wide varied responsibilities so it may take a few job transitions to find an area that is rewarding and you consider a “fit”!
