Clinical Hygienist and Workers’ Compensation Administrator Cory KirklandWhat is your position at UNC-Chapel Hill, and how long have you been associated with the University?

I started at UNC-Chapel Hill in 2016 as the Facilities Safety Officer. I moved over to my current role in 2022 as the Clinical Hygienist and Workers’ Compensation Administrator.

How did you initiate your career in this field or what led you to your current position?

I had wonderful professors at NC State who got me into the field. By allowing us to get our hands dirty and providing courses that led to certifications, it piqued my interest in the field.

Which sectors of the University does your role impact, and in what ways does it contribute to those areas of work?

My role impacts anyone who is employed by the University. From flagging positions for immunization review to processing claims I can interact with anyone at anytime depending on what is happening on a particular day.

Describe what you love most about your job.

The people, I enjoy who I work with and how every day is something different. I would say the most interesting part of my job is learning about other people and their role within the University. It is fun to hear what we have going on around campus.

What advice do you have for those interested in entering a career in your line of work?

Get certifications and network! My first job was in wastewater operations, and I was able to take the skills I learned in that role on top of my degree to pursue my current career.
